2024/25 Winter Restoration Projects
The Heritage Quarries are home to seven endangered native ecosystems. Our goal is to restore and revitalize each of them to improve the quality of native habitats to support wild plant and animal life and support sustainable outdoor recreation.

Thank you to CITGO, The Forge: Lemont, ComEd, the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity, and numerous members of the community for providing the funds to improve the Quarry Shorelines and extend the Pollinator Meadow.

Click the video below for a brief overview of the projects.
In conjunction with the Heritage Quarries Restoration Plan, beginning in November, 2024, we will be conducting large scale clearing of invasive trees and plants (buckthorn, honeysuckle, tree of heaven, multi-flora rose, burdock, and more) around the shorelines of the Kruger Quarry system. Post clearing, we will seed the shoreline with native plants designed to improve habitat quality for native wildlife.

We will also be burning and extending the existing pollinator meadows adjacent to Kruger Quarry and the I&M Canal near parking lots one, two, and three.
