2023 Weeds to Seeds Fundraiser

Thanks to friends old and new for making our first Weeds to Seeds event a success! We enjoyed idyllic weather, amazing food, and great company.

Most importantly, we had an informative discussion about the current and potential future state of the precious and endangered ecosystems present in the Heritage Quarries Recreation Area and our community-centric vision for restoring and protecting them for future generations.

Featuring fine dining provided by Wooden Paddle, live music, and a special presentation on the ecology of the Heritage Quarries by David Bart, Senior Ecologist at Stantec Environmental Services.

How Will We Use Your Contribution?

Our twenty-year VISION is to help transform the Heritage Quarries Recreation Area into a place that supports the diversity of native plants, animals, and rare ecosystems while remaining a welcoming place for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the outdoors and learn about nature.

Our goal this year is to raise $100,000 to complete work on an inviting outdoor education and public gathering space that can be enjoyed by all visitors to the Heritage Quarries Recreation Area. The project site is located north of the I&M Canal, on the south edge of Krueger Quarry, and just east of Parking Lot 2 and the second footbridge leading into The Forge: Lemont Quarries adventure park.

Your generous contribution will support the completion of four key projects at the site:

  • The addition of a new covered pavilion that will be available for the general public

  • The addition of limestone stair cases enabling easy access to the quarry shelves below the site

  • The clean up and restoration of one of the last remaining 19th century home sites in the quarries

  • The removal of invasive tree and plant species and subsequent planting of natives in the area
